Seeing Beyond the Highlight Reels

·Today, I had to remind myself that most of what people are posting, and most of what we're seeing on social media, is highlight reels. Perfect workouts. Exotic vacations. New cars. New designer outfits. Successful business stories. Perfect families. Perfect photos. Blah, blah, blah. And I'm not faulting anyone for posting their highlights because they're excited and proud, and they absolutely should be. They should be able to brag when they have an accomplishment. When I'm excited or have a proud moment, I post, too.
But, seeing all these highlight reels can really make you feel like shit sometimes. They can leave you feeling inadequate, and hopeless, and wondering why it's so easy for everyone else, when it's always so damn hard for you.
Here's the thing though, those same people who are posting their highlights, they have crap days, too. They also have struggles, and valleys, and hurdles to jump, too....we just don't see those as often. I mean who wants to post when they're broke or had a bad day, or gained 15 pounds?
So, the next time you're scrolling, and you find yourself falling into the "highlight reel trap", gently remind yourself that those "perfect" people on social, are ONLY perfect on social. In reality, they are real people with real lives, just like me and you. We all need that reminder sometimes. Keep your head up, and keep on being your authentic self because there is NOTHING more perfect than that.
Much love to you all ~ Stacey
